SEE & DO - CHIKWAWA
Chikwawa is located in the Southern Region; about 2 hours drive from Blantyre. Lake Malawi flows in to the Shire River which is the biggest river in Malawi. Chikwawa is one of the poorest areas in Malawi, however offers some unforgettable sites. There are two main game reserves in Chikwawa as well as the largest sugar plantation in Malawi. The river can be dangerous and swimming is highly not recommended. Fishing is permitted, however please be very careful on river banks as there is a high population of crocodiles
Passed Chikwawa is Sucoma which has a club with a bar, swimming pool and nice shady views of the river. If lucky you may be able to capture a few Hippo sites. Chikwawa or the lower Shire as it is sometimes known, can see extremely high climate temperatures, therefore ensure you have sun block, keep hydrated and where possible sit in the shade. Even during the rainy season, you may find yourself sweating.
Chikwawa also has the infamous Neem Tree, which grows all over the area and is known to cure of 24 diseases including high blood pressure and Uric Acid. The locals burn the leaves to discourage mosquitos at night. Malaria is high within this region so be aware. Another insect to watch out for is the ‘Tsetse’ fly or bull Fly, known for its sleepiness disease, insect repellents should be used at all times.
Nchalo Sugar Estate
Nchalo sugar estate is the largest employer in the Lower Shire Valley. This sugar estate extends from Lengwe National Park to the west bank of the shire River. Tourists have two areas that are a must see, firstly the Nchalo Sports club – a sports club situated by the Shire River allowing you to sit right by the river and enjoy beautiful views and perhaps a glimpse of some hippos.
Swimming here is forbidden, fishing is permited without a need of a licence, however you will need you own equipment, the sports club also has a swimming pool, a snooker room, tennis court, squash court and serves restaurant food and ice cold drinks. The second feature that may be of interest to tourists is the golf course. Memberships are required to use these facilities however can be attained for approximately $10 and an additional $4 to use the golf course.
