Likoma

Likoma District is an exclave of Malawi situated within Mozambique consisting of two main islands, Likoma and Chizumulu in Lake Malawi (as known in Malawi but known in Tanzania as Lake Nyasa). It is a district in the Northern Region of Malawi. The capital is Likoma. The district covers an area of 18 km² and has a population of 13,000. The island of Likoma is 8km long and 3 km wide and lies within the eastern part of Malawi within Mozambican waters. Likoma as a beautiful Island, it’s used by tourists as a relaxed getaway alternatively for honeymoons. Massive baobab trees and shady mango trees populate the area. Likoma was a large missionary station in the late 1800’s, and was the only settlement with 100% literacy rate. Likoma is probably one of the least visited areas in Malawi, however offers one of the most spectacular innovative resorts and lodges, sandy rooms, private cottage on individual islands, magnificent snorkelling, beautiful sunsets and much more. The best way to get to Likoma island is to fly from Lilongwe, please ensure you check with your tour operator about times and costs.
