Security in Malawi depends highly on where you are. Majority of the crimes in Malawi are petty theft, such as pick pocketing, however it is highly advisable not to walk on your own at night to avoid muggings and trouble. Con artists also operate in areas populated by tourists; some disguise themselves as tour guides. All foreigners should ensure you ask either tour operators or owners of lodges or resorts, if there is anyone they can recommend. This would ensure you have a responsible and reliable guide.

During elections all foreigners are advised to stay away from protests or congregations happening within your area.

If driving please ensure your car is parked either by the main road or a recognized car park. Any mobile phones or valuables should be removed from the car or hidden. If walking around town in densely populated areas, be careful of pick pockets, anyone offering services or products that you do not want to purchase should be told, without hesitation.

Main cities such as Blantyre and Lilongwe attract people from all over the country and neighbouring countries, therefore the mentality is very different to rural areas, where there is more poverty. The rural area residents can be more helpful and polite than main cities, this could be due to tradition and culture is held strictly and also tourism is their main provider of income.
If moving to Malawi it is recommended that high security alarm be fitted to main resident entrances. Some security companies provide a “rapid response” service, costing approximately $150/month, whereby a security squad arrives within minutes of pressing an alarm button. There are several reliable national security organizations in the main centres from which guards can be hired at a monthly cost of $150/guard/month. It is also possible to employ a guard directly for K3000 per month.
