Livingstonia

SEE & DO - LIVINGSTONIA

The descent through the Rukuru River, and down the rift Valley escarpment delivers you to the lakeshore villages. The sketch is unbelievable, deep turquoise water, golden sands and a kilometre drop from the escarpment. This huge picturesque setting is known as the Great Rift Valley. (Philip Briggs, Malawi, 5th Ed 2010)
This area of Malawi still remains practically untouched and unexplored by tourists largely because of the remote setting it finds itself in. However the area is well equipped with lodges, restaurants and supermarkets etc.
A must see in the area is the famous Livingstonia Mission, named after the famous explorer Dr David Livingstone whose historical contribution to the country are greatly known by all. Admire the beautiful architecture whilst you speak to the locals who’ll be more than happy to give you a good insight as to what you’ll probably never find in your tourist guide.
There’s no shortage of transport therefore you can get there by public transport from either Mzuzu or Karonga. As like anywhere in Malawi ensure you’re well stocked with medicine, and other mandatory travel requirements in case supermarkets are short of stock. Other great areas to explore include Manchewe Waterfall (4km from Livingstonia) and Lukwe Permaculture Garden here all fruit and vegetables are grown on terraces with streams and ponds.
