SEE & DO - ZOMBA PLATEAU

Zomba Plateau is approximately 2 hours away from Blantyre, the sheer size of the plateau can be seen from certain areas in Blantyre. The Plateau measures 130km2 and reaches an altitude of 2,087m and plateau drops reaching up to 1200m. Zomba Plateau has a variety of rivers and streams running through it, surrounded by indigenous green forests filled with a variety of birds, animal species as well as insects. Wild fruit is also plentiful however ensure you get expert advice as to what you can and can’t eat within the forest.
Visitors also have a choice of either camping or staying over at the luxurious Kuchawe Inn. Where ever you are you are guaranteed the views will be outstanding, waterfalls, plateau tops and views of the entire district of Zomba. The plateau is filled with walking paths to guide you when you are hiking and walking around; along your walks you will come across locals selling fresh fruit as well as beautiful Malawian African carvings, woven mats and hats.
Please ensure if you do decide to fish or have a barbeque you have been granted permission from either at the Inn or your tour operator. Before travelling up the plateau there are a series of shops along the main road if you require to stock up; food, water and insect repellent is advised.
Getting There
Getting there is fairly simple with either public transport or by car. The road up the plateau is the same road with a sign indicating Kuchawe Inn, the road is narrow, filled with curves, steep and with occasional bridge crossings. Travelling up or down the Plateau whether by foot or vehicle should be carried out very carefully especially during the rainy season. NB The district of Zomba receives above average rainfall.
